Meet the Staff: Josh Schuder

meWho am I? My name is Josh Schuder. I am a senior at UMD with a major in journalism and international studies. Along with LakeVoice, I also write for KUMD’s Northland Morning. I work as a multimedia assistant at Northland News Center, which is Duluth’s NBC and CBS affiliate. I was born in St. Paul, but have lived in Duluth from a young age. If I could have it my way, I would incorporate both of my majors into my work and become a foreign correspondent, dabbling in a variety of journalistic styles. What interests me? I love to write about local art and music the most. Small time artists are some of the most passionate people I have ever met. They do what they do because of love, not the expectation that they will be recognized and/or paid for it. There is a simmering artistic community in every city and some are more visible than others. Duluth is definitely one of those with an incredibly prominent artsy side and I love to do what I can to promote it and inform the world of its existence. I have been an on-air DJ at KUMD on the Basement for almost five years and I love having a connection to local music and artists. Though it is just a volunteer position, I’ve gotten more fulfillment from that than any paid job.

Why I chose Duluth? Duluth has been my reality since I was six years old and I’ve loved it here ever since. There are so many aspects of this city that make it a real home. There is something very honest and humble about this city and the people in it. What you see is what you get. The nature is beautiful, the people are generous, the coffee is dark; what more could you want from a hometown? I try not to take any piece of this place for granted and experience as much of it as possible.
