Stay amused and warm with this week's free events

The days are getting shorter and the chilling winter weather is kicking in. Here are some free events this week that will keep your energy up and body warm. The debate on whether to legalize medical marijuana in Minnesota is coming to Duluth this week. If you are interested in hearing more about it, join the panel discussion on Monday, Nov. 11, at 6:00 p.m. at the UMD campus, Bohannon Hall 90. Get the low-down from Minnesota politicians.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and generosity is in the air. Why not jump the gun and be active on Give to the Max Day, Tuesday, Nov. 12. This is your day to donate to your favorite Minnesota non-profit organizations and schools. After making your donations, treat yourself to a beer and night of bar games; if you are feeling sporty, The Other Place is having a bean bag toss at 7:00 p.m. If you are feeling smart, the Red Star is hosting a Buzzed-up Spelling Bee at 9:00 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 13 provides opportunities to indulge in the winter sports scene. Open ice-skating will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at The Duluth Heritage Sports Center. Learn, or brush up on, cross country skiing skills at the Duluth Cross Country Ski Club’s dry land training sessions, held at Chester Bowl Park from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Get your party hats because on Thursday, Nov. 14, Hartley Nature Center is hosting an open house and Birthday Bash from 2:00-6:30 p.m. Learn about the history of Hartley while warming up with coffee, hot apple cider, and, of course, cake.

On Saturday, Nov. 16, Duluth has lots of stuff going on from music to fashion shows. The day starts off early at 10:00 a.m. with the Get Great Stuff Gift Fair at the Duluth Congregational Church until 3:00 p.m. Great place to knock some items off the Christmas list. Later that afternoon, at 2:00 p.m., Duluth Public Library will be putting on the Edwardian Fashion Show, a modeling showcase of threads from the early 1900s. As always, Saturday night brings about music. Among the many shows going on, I would recommend Brothers Burn Mountain, performing at 10:00 p.m. at Carmody's.

That's a wrap on haps for this week. If you are looking for anything else in particular, let me know! Or check out these other local event calendars: Twin Ports NightlifePerfect Duluth DayVisit Duluth.
