Meet UMD's Scuba Instructor

UMD offers a scuba diving course every year taught by Elmer Engman, who has been diving for almost 49 years.

“The Open Water Scuba course is for someone who may know a little or nothing at all about scuba diving,” course instructor Elmer Engman said. “The class covers snorkeling and scuba equipment, physics as related to water pressure, diving safety and the diving environment.”

According to the 2015 United States transgender survey, 31% of transgender people said that they were denied equal treatment, verbally harassed and/or physically attacked in a retail store, theater, restaurant or hotel when the staff or employees either knew or perceived the person was transgender.

Safety Accessories

Many students are living on their own for the first time while attending college, and personal safety can become more important of an issue than it may have been previously.

Having a sense of security when living independently can impact a student’s experience in school.

UMDPD Sergeant Chris Shovein discussed the pros and cons of popular safety accessories and ranked them in the order of effectiveness and practicality for college students.
