Men's basketball success: by the numbers

BY RYAN DEPAUW | The Statesman It has been a historic season for men’s basketball. These five figures show why.

9- The number of years since the last time UMD Men’s Basketball had secured back-to-back winning seasons. With a 16-14 record last season, the Bulldogs sealed back-to-back winning seasons with a 103-88 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, pushing their record to 15-9 with just four games remaining.

42- A season high thus far scored by Pierre Newton against Southwest Minnesota State University. It’s the most points a Bulldog player has scored since Ryan Rasmussen scored 43 against Wayne State in 2011.   Jerry Meyer holds the record for most points in a game for the Bulldogs when he scored 47 on February 1, 1994 against the University of Wisconsin Superior.

78.4- The average points per game scored by the Bulldogs throughout the 24 games they’ve played this season. If the season ended today, this would be the highest average by any UMD Men’s Basketball team since the start of the new millennium.

103- The number of points the Bulldogs scored against the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs on Saturday, January 30.It’s also the most the Bulldogs have scored since they racked up 104 points against Wayne State on January 8, 2011.

206- The number of 3-point shots made already this season. With four games remaining, it’s the most the Bulldogs have made since the 2009-2010 season. The Bulldogs hold the edge, shooting 46.3 percent from beyond the arch.

Senior Taylor Lavery leads UMD in three pointers made this season with 61, an average of 2.5 per game. BRAD EISCHENS/STATESMAN
