Meet your pep band: Rachel Maschoff

BY ADAM QUANDT | The Statesman “Feed the band!” is a saying that is often heard being chanted from the pep band at various UMD sporting events.

Though it’s usually an unmet request from the band, there has been at least one occasion where someone has tried.

Sophomore trumpet player Rachel Maschhoff recalls this event as one of her favorite memories so far in her time with the UMD Pep Band.

“We were down at the Xcel Energy Center for the frozen faceoff and some guy who hated the Gophers bought the entire band popcorn simply because we also hated the Gophers,” Maschhoff said.

Maschhoff explained that the stranger also tried to buy the whole band pizza but was denied as the pizza company felt it would be them endorsing or promoting the band, which they couldn’t do.

Now in her second year with the pep band, Maschhoff is the section leader for the trumpets.

“The trumpet section this year has grown like crazy.” Maschhoff said. “However, we’re unfortunately lacking in other sections such as trombones and percussion.”

Maschhoff has been involved with music since her childhood after her mom required her to do at least three years of music.

On top of pep band, Maschhoff is involved in other aspects of the UMD music program, including the marching and concert bands and plans to continue with all of them throughout her time at UMD.

Much like last week’s “Meet your pep band” member, Maschhoff reiterated how much the energy of the band relies on the crowd.

“When they’re excited, we’re excited and it makes it a much more enjoyable environment,” Maschhoff said.
