UMD women's hockey team sweeps Minnesota State

BY AUSTIN RUSH | Statesman Correspondent | The Statesman Two-goal games from senior Michela Cava and sophomore Maria Lindh gave the UMD women’s hockey team first their Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep of the season.

Despite a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs were not without scoring chances early. They outshot the University of Minnesota-State Mavericks 11-4 and had a goal called off at 10:36. Junior Defenseman Sidney Morin later smoked a wrist shot off the post late in the first.

“I wasn’t disappointed with the way we started. We always want to score the first goal, once we get one it seems like they build off of that and we feel a lot of confidence,” head coach Maura Crowell said.

Those early offensive chances turned into goals in the second period, as two of UMD’s 16 second-period shots found the back of the net.

Maria Lindh buried a rebound goal mid-way through the second period, helped by Sidney Morin, who was credited with the assist.

Senior center Michela Cava would add to the Bulldog lead just minutes later, cleaning up in front of the net. Freshman right wing Emma Yanko got her first career point as a Bulldog on the play.

Both Lindh and Cava would find the net again before it was all over. Freshman Goaltender Maddie Rooney collected her first collegiate shutout and second win of the season, making 14 stops.

“I think it’s a huge boost of confidence. It’s the weight off my shoulders to get two big goals tonight, so I'm pretty happy about that and hopefully I can carry that on to next weekend,” Cava said.

The Bulldogs went on to secure the 4-0 victory and complete the weekend sweep over the Mavericks.
