Growing A Community

IMG_0259 On the corner of Arrowhead and Rice Lake Road, lies a hidden oasis for gardeners in Duluth called the Arrowhead Community Garden.

The garden is full of flowers and vegetables from people all over town, and this little garden is a place for people to meet and grow as a community.

According to Outside Magazine, Duluth was voted the number one outdoor city in America.

However, people can find it hard to have enough space to do some of the things they enjoy.

Kendra Sharkey, a local gardening enthusiast has used the garden as an escape from the urban setting of downtown Duluth.  “It really is great to have a place like this, it is so fun and living in an urban place like this, I don’t have any room to garden at home.”

The Arrowhead Community Garden, is one of 17 locations owned by the Duluth Community Garden Program, led by Jahn Hibbs.  The program started in 1977, and according to their website, they have around 133 gardeners.

Sharkey has been gardening on Arrowhead for almost a decade, and she loves all of the people and plants that come into the garden.

“You meet people from all walks of life,” Sharkey said.  “You get families, individuals, groups of neighbors that all chip in, it really is a lot of fun and you meet great people.”

According to their website all that one needs to become a member, is to attended their meetings at the beginning of the season, and rent out a plot.  Ms. Sharkey shared that the plots are about 20x20 feet, and run about $24 each.
