Meet the staff: Olivia Taylor-Washek

IMG_0039editedWho am I? I’m Olivia, and I am a creative writer. I love writing fiction because it allows me to experiment with ideas from my crazy imagination. I've known that I wanted to write professionally since I was in grade school. I wrote my first "novel" at the tender age of 9 (its storyline included a fairy, a beagle, and a mansion where they happily lived together). Since then, I have continued writing and decided to declare a journalism major my freshman year at UMD. I’m also majoring in Hispanic studies; so feel free to get bilingual with me. After graduation, I hope to move on to grad school, preferably in a city considerably warmer than Duluth! Outside of school, I dance, dance, and then dance some more. My favorite cereal doesn't really matter because all I care about is the milk (1 percent only please!). In my spare time I do a lot of eating and retail therapy, also known as shopping. I am in love with sloths, and if money was not an issue, I would be a volunteer at The Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica, working with temporarily disabled sloths.

My position: I will be working as an art director on the LakeVoice art desk. My job is to take and edit pictures for the LakeVoice team's stories. I have an eye for specific details and am experienced with a camera. I’m excited to show off my photography skills, and I can't wait to get involved with a legitimate news publication!

Why I chose Duluth: Duluth is my hometown, and after high school, I couldn't bear to part with my friends and family just yet. Also, I am completely obsessed with the beautiful Duluth summers and visiting the shores of Lake Superior every chance that I get. Being a Duluth native, I'm familiar with a lot of the fun customs and traditions that Duluthian's partake in each year.
