Three Duluth microbreweries show off their facilities

Print On April 6, 1933, prohibition ended, clearing the way for microbreweries around the United States to once again begin brewing alcohol. According to a Zenith City article, Fitgers sold 19,000 bottles and 1,260 kegs of beer on the day that prohibition ended. Beer brewing has been a fixture of Duluth for many years, and today there are eight different microbreweries providing local beer. LakeVoice photographer Jenae Peterson provides a photo story of the oldest brewery in town (Lake Superior) and the two newest (Canal Park and Bent Paddle).

Lake Superior Brewing Company

Dale Kleinshmidt has been a co-owner of Lake Superior Brewing Company for many years. He started as a guest brewer and has worked for the company for 17 years. Lake Superior Brewing Company has been in business since 1994, and has plans to expand with the help of outside investors.

Canal Park Brewing Company

Canal Park Brewing Company opened in November of 2012. Badger Colish is one of the co-owners and a head brewer. He, along with his business partner, started planning for the company three years ago. He says there is no brand competition in craft brewing because each of the companies help each other out.
