Funding needed for University of Minnesota's Health Services

For the hardships that come with college, UMD Health Services provides on campus counseling for just about everything. Mental health, in particular, has become a hot topic on campus.

"The severity of health issues that students come to college with has really increased," said Jean Bairbeau-Thoennes, Associate Program Director and Counselor at UMD Health Services. "Students are dealing with a lot more stressors, such as funding the cost of college on their own, so students are taking more credits and are working to try to balance it out."

Meet UMD's Scuba Instructor

UMD offers a scuba diving course every year taught by Elmer Engman, who has been diving for almost 49 years.

“The Open Water Scuba course is for someone who may know a little or nothing at all about scuba diving,” course instructor Elmer Engman said. “The class covers snorkeling and scuba equipment, physics as related to water pressure, diving safety and the diving environment.”

According to the 2015 United States transgender survey, 31% of transgender people said that they were denied equal treatment, verbally harassed and/or physically attacked in a retail store, theater, restaurant or hotel when the staff or employees either knew or perceived the person was transgender.
